The incline bench press may appear similar to the flat bench press, but there are key differences in how the body is positioned during each exercise. The incline bench is set at an angle (typically between 30°to 45°), which shifts the focus of the movement to different muscles in the chest and shoulders. The most significant reason why the incline bench press feels harder is that it targets the upper chest (clavicular head of the pectoralis major) more intensely than the flat bench press, which primarily focuses on the middle and lower chest (sternal head). When you perform an incline bench press, you recruit your deltoids (shoulders) to a greater degree, especially the anterior (front) part of your shoulder. This increased involvement of the shoulders means that you’re working additional muscle groups, leading to a higher level of difficulty compared to the flat bench. If you struggle with shoulder mobility or feel pain during an overhead press, you can try this exercise. It targets your shoulders, chest, and triceps. Instead of pressing straight up, you’re pressing up and a wittle bit out, so the movement will let your shoulder blades rotate freely throughout the rep.

To start, you should insert one end of a barbell into a landmine rack attachment, load weight plates on the barbell, or just use the weight of the bar. Then you can start doing the following:
1.Start out standing tall, feet shoulder width apart, with the free end of the barbell pointed toward your chest, held up by both hands. Engage your core, tuck your chin, lean slightly forward, and avoid any arching in your spine.
2.With your right hand, move the barbell off to your right side, allowing your elbow to flare out at a 45-degree angle.
3.Now, as you press overhead, allow the barbell to travel at a slight diagonal rather than directly up.
4.Lean into the bar as your elbow locks out, then return the bar with control back to start.
5.Complete your reps, then switch sides.

The choice depends on the exercise and the load you need. Heavier compound movements are best performed with a barbell, as it allows you to stack more weight than you could with dumbbells, making it ideal for maxing out lifts like deadlifts or squats. Dumbbells, on the other hand, are better for unilateral movements and exercises with fewer points of contact, such as single-arm overhead presses, pistol squats, or single-arm triceps extensions. In general, if your goal is to lift maximal weight and set new personal records, a barbell is the optimal choice. If you want to focus on functional strength or unilateral training, a set of dumbbells is more suitable.
