It's a B-tier substitute. It’s better than skipping glute day, but it’s a far cry from a proper setup. The range of motion is fine, but the mental energy spent balancing the bar and worrying about your pelvic bones takes away from the mind-muscle connection you need for a massive pump.

If you can't get a straight bar, I'd actually recommend heavy dumbbell glute bridges over a curl bar thrust. The stability is better. However, if you're serious about this lift, you'll eventually realize that using a dedicated hip thrust bar or a full-size barbell is the only way to move real weight without bruising. It’s about longevity. You can’t train hard if you’re constantly managing avoidable 'gym-hack' injuries.
